The 6.0-magnitude earthquake that rocked Napa County Sunday morning not only destroyed homes and businesses, but sent dozens of pets fleeing in fear.
Now, pet owners around Napa have taken to social media to help find lost animals and reunite people with their beloved furry friends.
A Facebook group, Missing Pets of Napa Quake, has been a hub for residents to share pictures of their lost animals.
“Oso took off through a window during the earthquake early Sunday morning,” writes Facebook user Bergen Taylor Verdu. “His family, especially his dog pal, and little kids miss him desperately!”
Some recovered pets waiting to be reunited after Sunday’s temblor were sitting patiently at the Napa County Animal Shelter Thursday. Officials from the shelter have also been posting photos of lost pets on Facebook.
Kelly Tracey, the shelter’s supervisor, said it received 20 dogs after the quake. Eighteen of those dogs have already been reunited with their owners, but two dogs, including a small brown Chihuahua, are still waiting to be picked up.
The animals most affected by the quake, however, were cats.
“Cats are extremely sensitive to earthquakes,” Tracey said. “They’re just so frightened, especially with the aftershocks, the helicopters — all the commotion after the earthquake.”
The shelter has taken reports of around 80 lost cats and, as things start to calm down in Napa, some cats that hunkered down in closets, under porches and in other quiet places are starting to climb out.
“Hopefully they will start coming home,” Tracey said.
